Dancing Mania (in Cinema)

Following the dancing mania that our recent LOOMLAB mixtape provoked - I came across this wonderful poster collection, Dancing Plague of 1518, by the artist Niege Borges.

Artist Statement: In 1518, a bunch of people from a french town called Stransbourg were affected by something called dancing mania. It began with one lady named Frau Troffea dancing in the street and end up with, more or less, 400 people dancing on for days without rest, resulting in some deaths of heart attack, stroke and exhaustion. This project is, in some sort of way, a memorial for Frau Toffea. From the silliest little dance to the most elaborate dance sequence of the history of cinema, there were a lot of dancing in the last decades (not enough to kill anyone, I hope). Here are some of these dances.

My dad just sent this to me via email... a wonderful gem as I weed through my emails that accumulated too quickly over the holiday break.

Here’s to the Crazy Ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing that you can’t do, is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They invent. They imagine. They heal.
They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or, sit in silence and hear a song that hasn’t been written?
Or, gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.
While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world,
are the ones who do.

It never gets old. Thanks Dad for reminding me to remain crazy and to Think Different.

Concoctions [In the Kitchen]: Strawberry Shortcake

Growing up, summer always meant fresh strawberry shortcake at my grandmother's, usually eaten after a long day at the beach. Now that summer is official upon us - what better time than to welcome the strawberry season and make some strawberry shortcake.

I prefer fresh dropped biscuits drizzled with strawberries and topped with fresh whipped cream (real cream, not the cool whip!)

- dropped biscuits I use Bisquick: (Will need 3 tablespoons butter (melted), 2/3 c milk, 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 1/3 cups Bisquick. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Mix all ingredients together until soft dough forms. Drop by 6 heaping spoonfuls on un-greased baking sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.)

- 1 basket of strawberries: Slice strawberries into bite size pieces. Sprinkle with 2-3 teaspoons of sugar. I try to do this at least an hour before I serve the shortcake so the sugar has time to sweeten the strawberries.

- fresh whipped cream: Whip cream with electric mix until cream starts to form stiff peaks in bowl. Optional: While whipping sprinkle confectioners sugar and/or a drop of vanilla to taste. Start small and add small amounts. I prefer it barely sweet. The confectioners sugar/vanilla combo is called "Chantilly Cream".

Split warm shortcakes in half, fill with strawberries, and heap with mounds of whip cream. Enjoy!

Spring Shows Wrap Up

Another spring run of shows has passed and what a season! LOOMLAB showed at both Unique LA and Bazaar Bizarre Maker Faire this May. It was so amazing to meet all who stopped by the table and good to see familiar faces too! From Jackson Pollack connection to fractals, to the Ogham Ruins, to seismic activity, you learn something new everyday... [and it's a learning day on steroids while at the Maker Faire.] Interacting with such creative, inspiring, and thought-provoking people, some who perhaps I will work on a project soon together, it reminds me why I love doing what I do. Thank you!

While I was stuck behind my table for most of the shows, I was still able to venture out a bit and check the neighboring vendors (or perhaps you stopped by my table). Below are a few highlights.

Dark Energy, with hints of cayenne pepper and lots of caffeine. Available online or at select local retailers.

Also, try the scones from Sugarbird Sweets and Teas - She is also at the South Pasadena Farmer's Market every Thursday evening.

Bazaar Bizarre at the Maker Faire | San Mateo, California

The World's Largest DIY Festival: Maker Faire is a family fun festival to MAKE, create, learn, invent, CRAFT, recycle, build, think, play & be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science, and technology.

Here are a few stand-outs from the show, geektackular, or just simply genius.

Focal Length Designs: sick creations by Isaac Watson, who "reclaims old, broken and neglected camera lenses and turns them into one-of-a-kind cuff bracelets perfect for the photography geek, designer or fashionista. Each bracelet is hand-formed, filed, sanded and buffed with a focus on the intersection between photography, fashion, art and design." I have one of his creations and cannot take it off. I wear it with everything.

Discovered this golden nugget while researching the next collection: The skin of the sun god Ra was thought to be made of gold.

What's the concept for the next collection? .... Egyptian CMKY.

This golden mask lay over the head, chest and part of the shoulders of the mummy of Psusennes I, as a layer of protection. The royal headdress with ureaus cobra and the divine false beard he wears attested to his royal and godly status. History of the Hand Turkey

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and survived Black Friday! We are still recovering from self-induced food comas at LOOMLAB.

For your reading enjoyment, here is a brief history on the hand turkey, as penned by Accumulated Errata.

The first hand turkey recorded can be found among the cave paintings at Lascaux, dated from 13,000 BCE. The stunningly accurate portrayal of the hand turkey is not a hoax, but rather has been verified by the presence of hand turkey fossils in the surrounding French countryside. Carbon dating suggests that they are from 13,000 BCE.

In 1000 CE, a hoarde of Vikings land in Newfoundland. They lived in this new land for some months, bringing with them native European livestock, including boars, cattle, and hand turkeys. when the Vikings gave up on this hostile, barren place, they left the hand tukeys behind. From here, they spread throughout the eastern territories of North America.

In 1899, hand turkey populations hit an all-time low. The bird's colorful plumage became a popular feature of ladies' fashion; the hand turkey was killed for its feathers. People regularly consumed 8-course meals, and the hand turkey was frequent dish. It is said that President William McKinley consumed as many as 12 hand turkeys a day. This boom in popularity spelled trouble for the most noble of species.

Like the dodo bird, the mastadon, and the Caspian tiger, the hand turkey remains only in our imaginations, kindergarten classrooms, and the memories of a few old folks who still remember the days when hand turkeys roamed free across the American landscape.

I recently had the good luck to visit the opening of Simmons and Burke 's show IF NOT WINTER at the Michael Kohn Gallery. I often attend art openings in and around LA, but rarely does the art affect me as much as this show did. It was pure and raw and technical and an orchestra of image and sound - excuse my language, but their work is a complete mind fuck.

If you can get out to visit their show before it closes, I highly recommend it. It was an honor to be present to experience such true works of genius.
For their second solo show in Los Angeles, the artists have created a collection of work that underscores their now iconographic style. Using the Internet as their source material, Simmons & Burke have effectively combed through millions of images and sounds, appropriating these once disparate elements into the grand narratives of their art. Embracing a sense of horror vacui (literally, a fear of empty spaces) in their artwork, Simmons & Burke fill the entire surface of these works, creating depth from rich layers of imagery and sound.

"The collaborative duo of Case Simmons and Andrew Burke share a tendency toward epic spectacles that fuse human triumph, folly and cosmic events with the likes of 15th-century Netherlander Hieronymus Bosch or 16th-century German Albrecht Altdorfer. But while such forebears delivered such imagery as Christ issuing his last judgment from a kind of divine bubble hovering above a scorched and debouched earth, or a portal to heaven opening above a massive battle scene, Simmons & Burke are more likely to deliver Karl Lagerfeld decked out in white and emerging from the clouds, Michael Jordan dunking in the sky or Mr. Roarke and Tattoo of Fantasy Island mounting a podium while Britney and Madonna kiss in the corner. All this is handled via collage reminiscent of dada, with a kind of post-tweaker mania about it, and arranged in compositions that recall the sort of Renaissance and Baroque layouts art historians diagram with diagonal lines and triangles, but that you’ve probably seen more familiarly while tripping on a kaleidoscope. The most pleasurable eyestrain you’ll ever know is paired with equally cacophonous layered soundtracks matched to each of their Paradise on Earth visions."

Matter of fact: The Particle Zoo makes particle physics that make you warm and cozy!

Particle Zookeeper, Julie Peasley hand-makes the particle plushies in her studio in Los Angeles. Her "particles are art items factoring the equation: SCIENCE+ART=UNDERSTANDING." In addition to being doggone cute, Peasley creates her plushies to raise awareness and interest in the fascinating field of particle physics.

To simulate maximum mass - she adds gravel to the dark matter (instead of standard poly-fill minimum mass)

Deka Ray's Cuboctahedrons

It's been a minute since my last post...wrapping up an amazing time at Unique LA and LOOMLAB also just moved its [world] headquarters to South Pasadena. World may be a bit presumptuous as it is our only headquarters right now, but it has a good ring to it.

Jumping back into highlighting nerdy cool with Deka Ray Jewelry, the brainchild of Eugenie Huang. My favorite piece of Deka Ray's is the Deathstar Debris Cluster - or a "8 cuboctahedron cluster in oxidized bronze necklace on an oxidized silver chain."
But the multiply studs are pretty super too....

In geometry, a cuboctahedron is a polyhedron with eight triangular faces and six square faces. A cuboctahedron has 12 identical vertices, with two triangles and two squares meeting at each, and 24 identical edges, each separating a triangle from a square. (thank you wikipedia)

I also just learned that a cuboctahedron is an Arcimedian solid (I love this especially since my cat's name is Archimedes!)

Fractal Love

Inspired by fractals, I recently incorporated them into a LOOMLAB scarf.

What is a fractal? By definition (thank you Wikipedia) A fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole."

Obsessed with terrariums - can't wait to go to the Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market tomorrow to get some charming vintage apothecary jars so we can make some! Thanks to DWELL and Kelly Malone's WORKSHOP, they put together a very informative how-to slide-show explaining how to make your own terrarium! And if you don't have any extra mason jars, wine glasses work great too!
