Arc Attack!

Saw Arc Attack perform at the 2010 Maker Faire in San Mateo - it was electrifying.

What happens when you have combine two enormous twin Tesla Coils, 1/2 million volts, chain-mail suit and some electronic beats of the likes of DJ Shadow and Aphex Twin? Watch for yourself.

Move Over Avatar - LOOMLAB unveils 3D scarf

I recently read a great article from the LA Times called 3D: Hollywood's latest hot trend. It is a thorough study on the immediate and long-term effects that 3D (thank you Avatar) is having in Hollywood.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-3d-20100425,0,3625039.story

"Hollywood rarely does anything unless it overdoes it. Warner Bros. President Alan Horn recently said that 3-D will be standard for its big-event movies. In all, 19 films will be released in 3-D this year, up from five in 2008...."

Well, not to be outdone (:-), LOOMLAB just released its first 3D scarf: 3D Fractal. And yes, it even comes with its own pair of 3D glasses.

Subatomic Particle Plushies

Matter of fact: The Particle Zoo makes particle physics that make you warm and cozy!

Particle Zookeeper, Julie Peasley hand-makes the particle plushies in her studio in Los Angeles. Her "particles are art items factoring the equation: SCIENCE+ART=UNDERSTANDING." In addition to being doggone cute, Peasley creates her plushies to raise awareness and interest in the fascinating field of particle physics.

To simulate maximum mass - she adds gravel to the dark matter (instead of standard poly-fill minimum mass)

Deka Ray's Cuboctahedrons

It's been a minute since my last post...wrapping up an amazing time at Unique LA and LOOMLAB also just moved its [world] headquarters to South Pasadena. World may be a bit presumptuous as it is our only headquarters right now, but it has a good ring to it.

Jumping back into highlighting nerdy cool with Deka Ray Jewelry, the brainchild of Eugenie Huang.
My favorite piece of Deka Ray's is the Deathstar Debris Cluster - or a "8 cuboctahedron cluster in oxidized bronze necklace on an oxidized silver chain."
But the multiply studs are pretty super too....

In geometry, a cuboctahedron is a polyhedron with eight triangular faces and six square faces. A cuboctahedron has 12 identical vertices, with two triangles and two squares meeting at each, and 24 identical edges, each separating a triangle from a square. (thank you wikipedia)

I also just learned that a cuboctahedron is an Arcimedian solid (I love this especially since my cat's name is Archimedes!)

Fractal Love

Inspired by fractals, I recently incorporated them into a LOOMLAB scarf.

What is a fractal? By definition (thank you Wikipedia) A
fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole."

Interested in generating your own fractals? Make your own fractals by downloading this amazing program (written by Duncan Chambray) http://www.pbase.com/duncanc/fractal_images

Images below are highlights from Duncan's flickr group, highlighting fractal artists. http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=fractalworks&m=text

And for the nerd in all off us...listen to Mandelbrot Set by Jonathan Coulton ;-)
